Outline of method

Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is chlorinated with sulphuryl dichloride to give ethyl 3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxybenzoate. The ester is saponified and the free acid is decarboxylated by heating with N,N-dimethylaniline to give 2,6-dichlorophenol.
