Outline of method

6-Chloro-o-cresol is heated with chloroacetic acid and sodium hydroxide solution at a controlled pH to yield sodium -chloro-o-tolyloxyacetate. The unreacted cresol is extracted with diethyl ether, and the acetate converted to the free acid which is crystallized from cyclohexane.
